Apart from Christmas day, 25th December is celebrated as ‘Good governance Day’ in India, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.Good Governance Day was established in 2014 to honor Prime Minister Vajpayee by fostering awareness among the Indian people of accountability in government.
On 23 December 2014, the ninety-year old former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (posthumously) were announced as recipients of India’s highest civilian award for merit, the Bharat Ratna, by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.
Following this announcement, the Modi led NDA government, announced that 25th December would be henceforth commemorated annually in India as Good Governance Day. This is because, Vajpayee is considered as one of the most accountable person in governance.
Since, this day is celebrated as good governance day, thus there should be work on this day to show accountability toward work. Meanwhile, Christmas is also celebrated on this date, and hence should be a holiday.
Thus, the opposition party, Indian National Congress criticized government questioning the secularism in the nation.
